2000 Mazda Monster Miata Upgraded 411HP Mustang V8 3,296 miles $29,987 This 2000 Mazda Miata was purchased in 2008 in Dallas, TX (no rust) and then sent to California to Monster Miata for modification. Martin Wilson at Monster Miata built a rearend (3.27 ratio) from an early 80’s T’bird (independent suspension), a driveshaft appropriate for road racing, a K member to accept a 5.0L V8 Mustang engine, and a fan cooling system. The engine was hand built professionally, starting with a standard bore 302 block from a 1990 Fox Body Mustang. A 331 stroker kit was added (Scat steel forged crank, Mahle pistons, Scat rods, Vic Jr. aluminum heads), dyno tested and broken in. Transmission is a TKO 600, strong enough for the horsepower of the 331. Clutch is hydraulic (McLeod). DG coilovers, adjusted for the additional weight of the engine, allow a near 50/50 balance of the car. It does not over or understeer. It can be made to oversteer with aggressive driving, but it drifts predictively (does not snap). The car is balanced (and handles) as well as a stock Miata, but has tremendous torque coming out of a corner. Top speed at COTA was 140 mph. On a dyno, the engine reads 411hp. A rear wing and body aero kit were added to increase downforce and accept wider slicks. The car runs Hoosier slicks, mounted on 949 Racing light weight alloy wheels. Also included is a set of Toyo rain tires mounted on alloy wheels. The Hoosiers offer sticky adhesion, but due to the light weight of the car, don’t wear excessively. There are two sets of used Hoosiers already mounted, plus 2 NEW additional sets of Hoosiers yet to be mounted. Cool Shirt system was added to offer driver comfort in warm weather, including container, hoses, and on/off power switch. The system is set up to use frozen bottle water as a refrigerant (easy to add fresh cooling). Fire system is mounted behind the seats, with spray set up for trunk, driver’s knees, and engine compartment. Pull switch is located within easy reach of the driver. Power kill switch is located on the rear of the car for corner worker shutoff. Full halo roll cage was custom fitted to the car. Brakes are a Wilwood design (discs on all 4 wheels), using Cobalt pads which seem to take forever to wear out. A brake adjuster is located just to the right of the console, within easy reach of the driver for on-the-fly adjustment. All the badges were removed from the car as a joke and “911” was added to the doors. People unfamiliar with the car usually squint and ask “Is that a Porsche?”. The nine eleven is actually meant to mean nine one one (emergency number, get it?) The valve stem caps are .44 magnum bullets and a flag on the rear power master reads “Remove Before Flight”. The only missing ingredient is an “EJECT” sticker for the passenger’s seat. The car is offered without the seats since they were custom built to fit my frame. They are still installed for test drives before the sale. Seat belts (6 point will stay with the car and they have been recently re-certified). A hardtop is permanently mounted for stability and rigidity (as well as protection). Love the car, but got interested in vintage (CVAR and HVR), so I bought a 70 Mustang fastback to run in those series. I’ve used the car strictly for HPDE events (never actually raced) on weekends for seat time. It has the potential to aggravate quite a few Corvette and Porsche drivers LOL! Several binders contain all the work done to the car since 2008 for your reference. Sources for parts are included. The car has never been hit by another car, so the body is in great shape. The car will be sold as is except that the seats will be removed to insert in a 1970 Mustang being set up for vintage racing (seats are still in the car for test drives).
